Biographical Note
John Early, S.J. was born on July 1, 1814. He left Ireland for the United States in 1833 and attended Mount St. Mary’s College in Maryland. He transferred to Georgetown in 1834. On July 1, 1845 Early was ordained. He served as president of Holy Cross from 1848-1851 and was the founder and first president of Loyola College in Baltimore from 1853-1858. He took the position as president of Georgetown College from 1858-1865 before returning for a second term at Loyola from 1866-1870. He finally returned to Georgetown as president from 1870 until his death on May 23, 1873.
