Biographical Note
James Clark, S.J. was born in Clark’s Valley, Pennsylvania on October 21, 1809. He graduated in 1829 from West Point Military Academy but resigned his commission in 1830. After his graduation he taught science at St. Mary’s College before entering the Jesuit order in 1844 and was ordained in 1847. He taught math and physics at Georgetown College, in addition to serving as the college’s treasurer. He was then appointed president of Holy Cross in 1861. He served in this role until 1869 when he became president of Gonzaga College until 1875. Clark died on September 9, 1885.
