Biographical Note

Joseph B. O’Hagan was born on August 15, 1826 and entered a seminary in Nova Scotia in 1844. Fr. O'Hagan entered the Jesuits and completed his theological studies in Belgium. He was ordained in 1861 and traveled to the United States. He became a chaplain for the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1873, he was appointed president at Holy Cross. While on board a ship headed to California, he died of apoplexy on December 15, 1878. His body was brought to Holy Cross and buried in the College cemetery.
