This is a transcribed copy of the essay written by Philip Gleason, which was printed in the Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 88, No. 1/4, 1977. It was published by the American Catholic Historical Society. Philip Gleason was then a Professor of History at University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

The essay discusses and cites James A. Healy's diary from Dec. 3 1848 - Aug. 24 1949, which he wrote during final year as a student at the College of the Holy Cross. The diary is in this Record Group. See Related Materils for more information.
