Historical Note
Upon its founding circa 1933, The Cross and Scroll Club, with the subtitle "The Hellenic Academy of Holy Cross College for the Promotion of Classics Studies," was a club with the aim to discuss classical literature. The club quickly transitioned into a club devoted to the promotion and discussion of literature and scholarship across liberal arts disciplines. Upon its founding, the club established an annual lecture series for the Holy Cross student body and community. These lectures covered a range of topics, and often were often had a thematic category each academic year. By the 1960s, the Club was known as the Cross and Scroll Society, and sponsored events other than lectures, such as dramatic productions, musical programs, discussion groups, and off-campus trips. Promoting cultural activities and academic discussion was central to its mission.
