Historical Note
The Philomathic Debating Society is the second oldest debating society (behind the Bishop Joseph Fenwick Debating Society) at College of the Holy Cross, and was founded in 1850. The mission of the Society was to train freshman and sophomore debaters by promoting eloquence and helping them to acquire knowledge in history and literature. The Society had an appointed moderator who ran regular meetings, which included a debate between four members on a chosen topic. By 1914, the constitution changed its mission to not only inform on history, but also economic, political, and sociological topics. The Society's motto was "Respondere Parati."
