Biographical Note

Thomas E. Murphy, S.J. was born in New York City on January 27, 1856. He studied at St. Francis Xavier College before entering into the Jesuit order in 1875. He conducted his theological studies at Woodstock College, Maryland before being ordained on August 24, 1890. He then served as Dean of Studies at Georgetown University and president of St. Francis Xavier College, before becoming president of Holy Cross in 1906. Murphy left Holy Cross in 1911 to become an administrator at Brooklyn College and then Rector of St. Ignatius Church until his death on December 14, 1933.
