Biographical Note

Joseph F. Hanselman, S.J. was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 28, 1856. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier in 1877 and joined the Jesuit order in 1878. He taught at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City before being ordained in 1892. He began his work at Holy Cross as Dean of Studies and Discipline in 1893. In 1901 he was named president of the Collegeand stayed in that role until 1906 when he was appointed Provincial of the Maryland-New York Province. He served as American Assistant to the General of the Society of Jesus in Rome from 1918 until his death on January 16, 1923.
