Biographical Note

William A. Donaghy, S.J. was born on November 13, 1909 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He enrolled at the College of the Holy Cross in 1927 before leaving to join the Jesuit order two years later. He studied classics at Shadowbrook from 1929-1933 and philosophy at Weston College from 1933-1936. He completed his graduate studies at St. Louis University in 1937. He was ordained in 1941. He returned to Weston College to work as a spiritual counselor from 1946-1948. He was then appointed Superior of Campion Hall in North Andover, Massachusetts until 1954, when he became president of Holy Cross. He was responsible for the construction of Haberlin Hall, the Mary Chapel, and additions to Fenwick Hall. He left Holy Cross in 1960 to pursue retreat work before returning to Holy Cross again in 1969 as a professor of literature. He died on January 24, 1975 and is buried at the College cemetery.
