Biographical Note

Raymond Swords, S.J. was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on February 9, 1918. He graduated from Holy Cross in 1938, before entering the Jesuit order. He went on to study theology at Weston College and completed his graduate studies in mathematics at Harvard University. He was ordained in 1950. In 1952 he came back to Holy Cross as a professor of mathematics and then became Assistant Dean of Studies and Director of Admissions, in 1960 he was named president of the College. During his time as president, Healy, Clark, and Mulledy Hall, and Hogan Campus were constructed. He left Holy Cross in 1970 when he took a position as president of Cranwell preparatory School in Lenox, MA. He later served as president of Regis High School in New York City from 1976-1980 and Cheverus High school in POrtland, MA from 1983-1984. He died suddenly on January 12, 1984 and was buried in the Holy Cross college cemetery.
