Historical Note

The Writer’s Workshop and the Writing Across the Curriculum Collaborative (WACC) programs were both founded in 1982 by Professor Patricia Bizzel. Bizzel was the director of both programs early on, until new directors were selected. The programs operated outside of the English Department, having their own established budget and reporting to the Provost’s Office. However, many directors were also a part of the English Department faculty and handling both positions proved difficult. Therefore in the early 1990s it was decided that a Writing Center should be established to oversee the programs, overseen by a single director.

Since 2015, the Center for Writing has been led by director Laurie Ann Britt-Smith. In 2021, Gabriel Morrison was hired as the Interim Assistant Director of the Center for Writing.
