Historical Note

Holy Cross sponsors 27 varsity sports, each of which competes at the NCAA Division I level. The Crusaders are members of the Patriot League, the Atlantic Hockey Association and the Women's Hockey East Association.

The origins of the basektball team date to 1901 when the College played its first game on January 11, 1901, losing to the Milbury Intermediates 21-13. It was a lost to Harvard on January 15, 1901 of that season that marked the school's initial outing against a collegiate opponent. J. Fred Powers was the first coach of the team and he lead the Crusaders through the 1908-1909 season, after which the sport was discontinued until 1920-1921. The team was renewed and continued to play until the 1930-1931 season. Under Holy Cross legend Albert "Hop" Riopel, Holy Cross basketball started anew for the third time in 1934-1935. After a disappointment 3-12 season, the sport was discontinued for the third and final time. When Edward "Moose" Krause's squad took the court against Assumption on Feburary 3, 1940, it was the final "beginning."

On March 25, 1947, Holy Cross defeated Okalahoma to win its first and only NCAA Basketball Championship. The squad included Holy Cross greats Dermott O'Connell, Frank Oftring, George Kaftan, Joe Mullaney and Bob Cousy.
