Letters from Rev. John Bapst, S.J., 1851-1859
Scope and Contents
This collection relates to the history of the Catholic Church in the Rockland-Thomaston area of Maine. The letters are addressed to Cornelius Hanrahan, mostly from Catholic clergy from the 1840’s – 1870’s. Among the correspondents in the collection are Rev. John Bapst, S.J., Rev. Anthony Ciampi, president of Holy Cross and Bishop David W, Bacon, first Bishop of Portland, Maine. The topics of the letters concern the early Jesuit presence in New England and the running of the Church founded by Hanrahan.
