Scope and Contents

This collection holds the papers of Rev. Michael Earls and includes his bibliography, writings, reviews of his writings, correspondence, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, photographs and other print materials.The collection is arranged is arranged by item type and materials date from 1888 to 1957. The correspondence includes outgoing and incoming. The outgoing correspondence is arranged by recipient while incoming correspondence is arranged chronologically. The photographs found in this collection are undated but it includes photographs of Fr. Earls, his family and friends. Notably, there are his records of attending dinners and banquets of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of New York from 1930 to 1947.

Biographical / Historical

Rev. Michael Earls S.J. was born at Southbridge, MA on October 2, 1875. The eldest of ten children, he received his diploma from Holy Cross in 1896. Later he received a Master’s degree in Literature from Georgetown University and spent most of the following year in Europe. Earls returned to the United States in the summer of 1898 and entered the Grand Seminary to study for the priesthood. In 1904 he taught at Boston College High School. He was ordained in June 1912. The following year he was assigned to Holy Cross where he taught English. From 1927-1930, he served as Minister of the Jesuit Community at Holy Cross.

Rev. Earls was perhaps best known as a literary figure. He published three volumes of verse, two novels, two books of short stories, and one play. He was known by nearly all the Catholic writers and artists of his time. His friends included Louise Imogen Guiney, Andrew O’Connor, Aline Kilmer, Kathleen Norris, Rev. Charles O’Donnell, and Gilbert Chesterton. He died on Jan 31, 1937.
