Scope and Contents
Most of the correspondence in the collection is responses to Rev. Fortier concerning the proposed production of “Hecuba” by Holy Cross at the Sesquicentennial exhibition in Philadelphia on September 15 and 16, 1926. There are letters of support from individuals including the mayor of Philadelphia, W. Freeland Kendrick, and the Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal O’Connell. There is a letter written by Rev. Fortier to Congressman Louis A. Frothingham on behalf of A.B. Yaffe to request help to bring Yaffe’s mother to the United States from Lithuania in 1922.

Biographical Note
Rev. Father Matthew Fortier, S.J. (1896-1935) was born in Vergennes, Vermont on February 19, 1869. He entered the Society of Jesus at Frederick, Md., on July 29, 1893 and was ordained in Montreal on April 25, 1905. He taught at several different Jesuit colleges, including Gonzaga, St. Peter’s, Boston College and was dean of the graduate school of Fordham University from 1917 to 1919. He then lectured at St. Joseph’s College in Philadelphia on Political Economy and Sociology for four years. From 1895 to 1897 and again from 1924 to 1927, he taught at Holy Cross. He returned to Fordham in 1927 as dean of the School of Social Service. He died on May 22, 1935.
