Scope and Contents

This collection contains Fr. Higgins’ teaching material dating from circa 1941 to 1945. There are materials pertaining to teaching conversational and written Japanese during World War II as well as materials for some of his history courses. Some semester exams are included with these items. Finally, the collection contains an undated and unbound history class textbook written by Rev. Higgins entitled, “Freshman History.”

Biographical Note

Patrick Higgins was born in Lawrence, MA in 1893 and graduated from Boston College in 1914. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1914 at St. Andrew-on-Hudson and he studied at Woodstock College. He earned his Ph.D. in history at Fordham University in 1940. Fr. Higgins was ordained a priest in 1940. He taught at Boston College, Georgetown University and at Holy Cross, where he was chairman of the history department from 1932-1942. From 1957-1963, Fr. Higgins was archivist at Holy Cross. He died in 1968.
