Historical Note

Mittelbau-Dora (also Dora-Mittelbau and Nordhausen-Dora) was a Nazi concentration camp established in 1943 as a subcamp of Buchenwald and was located near Nordhausen in Thuringia, Germany. Eventually, it became an independent concentration camp. In early April 1945, the SS started to evacuate due to the advancement of the US troops. There were very few prisoners at the camp when it was liberated by the Allies on April 11, 1945. Photographs and films taken of the dead and dying prisoners were published around the globe and became well-known evidence of Nazi crimes. Today, the site of Mittelbau-Dora is a memorial and museum.
