Scope and Contents

This collection primarily holds the correspondence of Fr. Dowling and includes letters from family, former students, and other Jesuits dating from 1918 to 1971. There is a folder of letters from Eugene Sullivan dating from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Additionally, the collection hold materials pertaining to his Jubilee as a Jesuit, some of his writings, and photographs.

Biographical Note

Richard Dowling was born on August 24, 1898 in Waterbury, CT to John and Jane Dowling. He entered the Society of Jesus on September 7, 1917, and was ordained on June 18, 1930 at Weston College. Fr. Dowling received his bachelor’s degree from Boston College in 1923 and his master’s degree from Woodstock College in 1924. He was a psychology professor at Holy Cross for 32 years. Fr. Dowling died in 1972.
