Biographical Note
Thomas H. Dowd was born in Worcester in 1872 and graduated from the Classical High School in 1891. He went on to attend the College of the Holy Cross and graduated in 1894 as salutatorian. Dowd continued his education at Boston University Law School, and completed his studies there in one year instead of the typical three years, graduating magna cum laude. The Worcester native then opened law offices in Boston and was considered one of the most able members of the Suffolk County law community. An eloquent orator, Dowd spoke at many important occasions in Massachusetts. He was appointed as judge by Governor David I. Walsh in 1914 and served in Boston’s Municipal Court. Additionally, he served as an alderman in Boston and senator for the Back Bay District. Dowd married Ms. Helen Dolan of Roxbury MA, and they had a son. Holy Cross conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in 1915. Dowd died on September 5, 1959 at the age of 87.
