Scope and Contents

This collection contains the photograph album beloning to Fr. Smith and it documents his travels to Japan, the Philippines, China, Egypt and Europe. Additionally, there is a folder with loose photographs including family portraits and additional travel photographs. The collection also has two letters and other items form the album. There are two copies of an article by Paul A McNally, S.J. entitled, “Observing a Total Eclipse of the Sun.” and a certificate for observing an Atomic test in 1957.

Biographical Note

Rev. Thomas Smith S.J. was born on August 19, 1900 in Brookline, Massachusetts. He attended Boston College High School before entering the Society of Jesus in 1918. He studied philosophy at Woodstock College from 1922-1925. After teaching in the Philippines from 1922-1928, he returned to study theology at Woodstock College and was ordained in 1931. Fr. Smith attended Georgetown and received an M.S. in physics. He taught physics and was chairman of the department at Weston College from 1937-1942. In 1945, he came to Holy Cross and was chairman of the physics department. From 1961- 1974, Fr. Smith was administrator of the Jesuit Community at Holy Cross. He died in March 1981.
