Scope and Contents

The collection contains records from the wholesale grocery company, Silas Peirce and Company including correspondence, business receipts, order placements and shipping receipts. Additionaly, there are four business ledgers used by the company. Documents pertaining to the breakup of the company may also be found in the collection. Materials date from 1821 to 1955, with the majority dating to the 19th century.

Biographical Note

Silas Peirce (1793-1879) was born on February 15, 1793 in Scituate, MA. In 1815, Peirce established the grocery firm Silas Peirce and Company in Boston. The company was in existence until 1926. In addition to his business, Peirce served in the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia from 1816 to 1822. He also served as the Chairman on the Board of Alderman for Boston in 1859-1860 and 1861-1862. Peirce was a member of the board from 1857 to 1862 and 1863 to 1864. Peirce died at the age of 86 on August 27, 1879 in Boston.
