Scope and Contents

This collection contains personal papers and correspondence letters dating mostly from the 1970s through the 1980s. Topics include teaching at Holy Cross, the activities of the Holy Cross Jesuit Community, and a donation to the New England Jesuit Province. Additionally, there are Fr. Burke's personal letters. There is also a folder concerning an international trip in 1975. Newspaper clippings and a copy of his death certificate may be found in the collection.

Biographical Note

Rev. Richard P. Burke, S.J. was born on March 12, 1917 to Catherine (Downing) and Alexander Burke in Newburyport, MA. He graduated from Boston College in 1938 with a BA and earned a BS in social work in 1940. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1940 and completed his philosophy and theology studies at Weston College. Upon his ordination on June 16, 1951, he studied in Belgium and Rome. In 1955, he returned to Boston College as the Dean of Social Work from 1955-1958. Rev. Burke then taught sociology at Holy Cross from 1958-1963 and theology from 1964-1971. He was director of placement at Holy Cross from 1971 until 1984 and then was chaplain of Worcester City Hospital. He died on May 5, 1999
