The J. Alphege Brewer Collection
Content Description
This collection contains 132 etchings by J. Alphege Brewer dating from 1909 to 1939. Some etchings were collaborations between Brewer and his brother, Henry Charles Brewer while one etching, Evening on the Meuse. Huy. was a collaboration with F. Sherrin Brewer. The etchings are arranged in alphabetical order by title.
Additionally, the collection has some of the original sales labels, reproductions and reprints of some pieces and a sales booklet titled “Original Etchings.”

Biographical Note
J. Alphege Brewer (1881-1946) was a well-known British architectural painter and etching artist in the early 20th century. His father, Henry William Brewer was an architectural illustrator while his brother, Henry Charles Brewer painted watercolor landscapes and architectural paintings. Brewer studied at the Westminster School of Art.
Much of Brewer's work featured cathedrals, colleges, palaces, and other tourist destinations. Brewer exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art and at the Paris Salon of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Most of his etchings were published by Alfred Bell & Co and were available for sale. Brewer collaborated with his brother, Henry Charles, on many pieces.
