Biographical Note

Rev. Joseph Maxwell, S.J. was born in Taunton, Massachusetts on November 7, 1899. After a year of attending Holy Cross, he joined the Jesuit order on September 8, 1919. He studied classics and philosophy at St. Andrew-on-the-Hudson and Weston College before coming back to Holy Cross to teach from 1926-1929. He was ordained in 1932 and served as Dean of Studies at Boston College from 1935-1939, when he came back to Holy Cross as president of the College. Maxwell served as Rector of Cranwell Preparatory School after World War II and later became president of Boston College from 1951-1958. He died while on tour in Europe, he died on September 18, 1971. His body was transferred and buried at the Weston College Cemetery.
