Biographical Note

Rev. Philip Boroughs, SJ was born in 1949 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University in 1973 and a Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology in 1978. He received his Ph.D. from Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA, studying the life of Quaker preacher John Woolman (1720-1772). He had joined the Jesuit order in 1969 and was ordained in 1978. He made his final vows in 1986. Before coming to Holy Cross he served as the assistant novitiate director for the Oregon Province from 1980-1982. He then became rector of the Jesuit Community at Seattle University from 1989-1991 and was the vice president for Georgetown’s Mission and Ministry from 2003-2011. He also served as a member of the Holy Cross Board of Trustees from 2008-2011. He became president of the College in 2012, and remained in that role until 2021.
