Biographical Note

Bishop Fenwick was born in Maryland in 1782. After receiving his degree from Georgetown University he served as the university’s president. He entered the Jesuit order in 1806 and was ordained in 1808. In 1825 he was appointed as the bishop of Boston. He would later establish the College of the College in 1843 after purchasing land from Rev. Fitton. Fenwick himself donated many books from the Georgetown library as well as his personal library to the College, which are still housed in the Archives and Special Collections department.
