John McLaughlin Papers
Scope and Contents
This collection holds materials pertaining to John McLaughlin's political campaign for the United States Senate in 1970. It mostly holds news releases issued by his campaign but also contains position papers, newspaper clippings, speeches, correspondence and other election materials. There is an audio recording of an event held on September 12, 1970. Rev. Vincent Lapomarda, S.J. also spoke at the event and is featured in the recording.

Biographical Note
John McLaughlin was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1927. He studied for Jesuit priesthood at Boston College and was ordained in 1959. Afterwards, he studied at Stanford University and was awarded a Ph.D. from Columbia University. McLaughlin taught at Fairfield University and was Association Editor of America Magazine. In 1969, he received the Catholic Press Association award for his reporting on the Fourth World Assembly of the Council of Churches from Uppsala, Sweden. In 1970, he ran for the U.S. senate for Rhode Island, but lost the election. He then became a speechwriter for President Richard Nixon. McLaughlin left the Jesuits in 1975.
Afterwards, he worked in public relations and became a weekend radio host on WRC-AM in Washington D.C. He wrote for the National Review. In 1982, his television show, The McLaughlin Group premiered on a local Washington D.C. news channel. This was a political commentary show that brought together two conservatives and two liberals with McLaughlin seated in the middle. The show ended in 2016. His second show, John Mclaughlin's One on One premiered in 1984 and ran until 2013.
McLaughlin married twice after leaving the Jesuits. His first wife, Ann Dore, was his campaign manager and they married on August 23, 1975. They divorced in 1992. He married his second wife, Cristina Clara Vidal on June 22, 1997 but the marriage ended in divorce in 2010. McLaughlin died on August 16, 2016.
