This collection contains Fr. Madden’s teaching materials, including exams and syllabi. Additionally, it holds his writings such as handwritten sermons, retreats notes, speeches, correspondence and lectures. Finally, there is personal ephemera pertaining to his travels. Materials in the collections date from 1916 to 1980.

Biographical Note

Arthur Madden was born on June 25, 1916 in Boston, MA to Michael and Nellie (Collins) Madden. He attended Boston College High School from 1929-1933 and entered the Society of Jesus on July 30, 1933. He was at Shadowbrook from 1933-1937, and then attended Weston College from 1937-1940 and 1942-1946. He was ordained on June 16, 1945. Fr. Madden taught English, Rhetoric, and Theology at Holy Cross from 1947 to 1981 and retired shortly before his death. During his 36 years at Holy Cross, Fr. Madden was moderator of the student newspaper, The Tomahawk, later named the Crusader, and was assistant moderator of athletics. Additionally, he was moderator at the First Friday Club of Worcester. In 1968 and 1969, he studied English at Oxford University. Fr. Madden died on August 3, 1981 at the age of 65.
