Scope and Contents

This collection holds the personal papers of Rev. Kimball. There is correspondence to Rev. Kimball from David I. Walsh, the Belle Skinner Collection of Old Musical Instruments at the Wistariahurst and the Classical Association of New England. Additionally, there is correspondence from various individuals asking for Rev. Kimball’s help usually for scholarly assistance. Also included are portrait photographs given to Rev. Kimball by others. Finally, there is information on an Irish Illuminated Manuscript made in memorial of Rev. Kimball in 1935.

Biographical Note

Charles L. Kimball was born in 1880. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1899 and was ordained on June 28, 1913. Rev. Kimball taught at Holy Cross from 1905 to 1910, first as an insructor in the preparatory school and then as a professor of classic. He returned to Holy Cross in 1915 and taught classics until he retired from teaching in 1930. He became director of the library and founded the Jesuitana collection, now housed in Archives and Distinctive Collections. Rev. Kimball served as moderator of the Purple and moderator of the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He died on May 1, 1934.
