Scope and Contents

This collection contains material that mainly documents Rev. Boylan’s religious life. Included is typed and handwritten correspondence, Renewal Baptismal Promises, undated sermons, a list of sermons given by Fr. Boylan and a copy of his eulogy. These materials date from 1931 to 1978. Additionally, the collection has his Jesuit medallion, a crucifix, and his Military Corps medal.

Biographical Note

Bernard Boylan was born on May 5, 1905 in Woonsocket, RI to Matthew and Sadie (Burns) Boylan. He entered the Society of Jesus on August 14, 1924. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Boston College, and taught at Holy Cross from 1931 to 1932 before studying at Weston College. He was ordained on June 21, 1936. Fr. Boylan held a variety of positions at Holy Cross including Classics professor, treasurer and assistant to the president. From 1943 to 1946, he served as a Navy chaplain in Australia, the Philippines and New Guinea, where he was awarded the Navy-Marine Corps medal. He returned to Holy Cross as vice president and administrator from 1951 to 1955. Then, Fr. Boylan was pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Boston’s North End from 1955 to 1961, and served as administrator at several other Jesuit communities in New England. He died on January 29, 1978 in Worcester, MA.
