Scope and Contents

The collection contains six journals belonging to Fr. Peters. Four of these journals concern meditations and sermons written by him. Another journal contains inspirational stories and parables while the last journal contains literary quotations, poetry and retreat material. Also included in the collection are Fr. Peters’ sister’s Last Will and Testament and a signed document stating that he will abide by the Papal decree of Sacrorum Antistitum.

Diaries make up the bulk of the collection and they date from 1925 to 1937 with additional diaries from 1955 and 1962. The Shadowbrook and Weston diaries document his formation as a Jesuit in Massachusetts, while the Valkenburg diaries concern his time spent at the Jesuit house in Valkenburg, Holland. Included in this collection are two daily planners from 1921 and 1922 containing Donohue’s appointments, daily activities, and the dates he attended Mass. Additionally, there is a National Diary from 1940 and a travel diary. Finally, there is Rev. Donohue’s Harold M.Gore award for his contribution to Parochial League basketball along with the speech given in his honor in 1948.

Scope and Contents

This small volume contains approximately 40 pages of poetry and writings copied from various sources. It was owned by an unknown person, perhaps a student, but was the gift of “Fr. Rector” in 1880. It is possible that was Rev. Edward Boone, S.J. ninth president of Holy Cross.

Many of the entries were copied from well-known authors such as Emerson and Wordsworth and some are the works of Catholic clergy. There are several loose religious items in the volume.

Scope and Contents Contained in the collection is a typed copy of William Lewis’ daily journal of his Arctic Voyage under Captain Donald MacMillan on the vessel Bowdoin as the expedition’s cook. As the cook, and due to his age, Lewis did not join the rest of the crew during their activities in-land to Northern Greenland.
