Scope and Contents

The collection contains six journals belonging to Fr. Peters. Four of these journals concern meditations and sermons written by him. Another journal contains inspirational stories and parables while the last journal contains literary quotations, poetry and retreat material. Also included in the collection are Fr. Peters’ sister’s Last Will and Testament and a signed document stating that he will abide by the Papal decree of Sacrorum Antistitum.

Biographical Note

Rev. Albert R. Peters, S.J. (1835–1922) was born in La Havre, France on February 10, 1835. He came to the United States to study at Georgetown Preparatory School, Washington, D.C. He returned to France upon his graduation but came back to America at the age of sixteen and entered the Society of Jesus in Frederick, Maryland on September 2, 1851. After his ordination, Fr. Peters was sent to Holy Cross, where he held the position of a Spiritual Father and Minister. He also worked as a missionary in towns in the County of Worcester including Leicester and Spencer. While at Holy Cross, Fr. Peters served on the Board of Trustees for two terms beginning in September 1879, taught French, and served as the College’s Vice President, Treasurer, and Chaplain. He was a member of the Society for over 70 years.
