Scope and Contents

The collection contains the personal records of Rev. John J. McCoy and includes his personal writings and speeches along with administrative record books and reports concerning the various parishes at which he worked. Additionally, there are records for Catholic schools in western and central Massachusetts and scrapbooks with newspaper clipping documenting Rev. McCoy, his parishes and reports on Catholic groups around the United States. Materials in the collection date from 1877 to 1932.

The majority of this collection consists of personal notes and homilies and are organized chronologically. The homilies are mostly hand-written and cover a wide-range of subjects such as adultery, abortion, and love. There is correspondence between Fox and the Abbey of Gethsemane as well as essays written by Fr. Fox.

Rev. M. J. Coyne Theology Notes

This collection consists of Rev. M. J. Coyne’s notebook from St. Joseph’s Seminary. This handwritten book has 266 pages dating from 1883-1888. Most of the passages of the book are written in Latin. It has a small picture of the seminary. This volume came with other books given to the library by Benjamin Davis.

Rev. Richard McIntyre Papers

Scope and Contents This collection documents Rev. McIntyre’s time when he studied at the Canadian College in Rome. The first letters are written on board the ship and continue through his stay and subsequent travels in Florence and Vienna. The letters are filled with his impressions of the city, his duties and studies, college life, and affairs at the Vatican. Rev. Thomas L. Kelly Papers

The collection contains materials collected and used by Rev. Kelly to write the histories and biographies during the course of his career. His work included a history of Mount Saint Mary’s College and a biography on Rev. James Mullen. The collection also includes personal correspondence, and a two volume autobiography written in 1906. There is photographs and images of individuals featured in his writings as well as notes on a biography of Bishop Fenwick of Boston.

Scope and Contents This scrapbook dates from 1887 to 1890 but is arranged in no particular chronological order and contains clippings from various papers or books. The main theme of the collection is one of Catholic and Irish identity. The pages contain pieces on famous Irishmen and Catholics in American History and include the obituaries of Cardinal Newman and the Irish-American poet John Boyle O’Reilly. Saint Mary’s Catholic Church of Newburyport, MA Account Book

This account book belonged to Rev. Henry Lennon and Rev. Arthur J. Teeling of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. It contains fifty-eight pages of entries recording payments between 1852 and 1969. The account book was given to the Holy Cross Libraries in August 1960 and was transferred to the Archives and Special Collections at an unknown date.

St. Bernard’s Church Account Book

The account book contains a record of expenses from 1850-1856, recorded by Rev. M.W. Gibson. It includes lists of expenses for building and furnishing a temporary chapel in 1850. The volume also contains the accounts of Rev. J. Boyce from 1856-1862, Rev. N. Noisseux. Assistant Pastor in charge of mission in West Boylston and the French in Worcester and Rev. P.J. O’Reilly, Assistant Pastor at St. John’s from 1857-59.

The collection mostly holds examples of heraldic visual design or more commonly known as coat of arms. There are many examples related to the Catholic Church, which was the specialty of Ryan's firm. Additionally, there are scrapbooks, brochures and other materials related to heraldry or the Academie Internationale d'Heraldique.
