Historical Note
Throughout the 1870s and 1880s, sports gained popularity on college campuses across the country, leading to the formation of athletic associations to support organized competition.
At Holy Cross, the Athletic Association was established in 1874 as a student-run organization overseen by Jesuit faculty member Mr. Henry J. Sandaal, SJ. Funding for athletic activities was provided through membership dues and student-organized fundraising efforts.
By the 1970s, the Athletic Association evolved into the College’s Department of Athletics. Today, Holy Cross sponsors 27 varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level.
