Scope and Contents

This collection contains Fr. Buckley’s personal documents and photographs, which include certificates, family photographs, and type-written sermons mostly dating from the 1940s-1970s. The sermons are organized by the Ecumenical calendar. There are also miscellaneous items written on Holy Cross stationary. This collection also contains Rev. Buckley’s undated retreat material that is organized into 4 folders.

Biographical Note

Charles E. Buckley was born on January 26, 1910 in Somerville, MA to Michael and Catherine (Taffe) Buckley. He graduated from Boston College High School and then entered the Society of Jesus at Shadowbrook, Lenox, MA on July 30, 1928. He received his bachelor’s degree from Boston College and his master’s degree from St. Louis University. Buckley taught at Holy Cross from 1936-37 before studying theology at Weston College. He was ordained on June 22, 1940. Rev. Buckley taught classics at Shadowbrook before returning to Holy Cross as a member of the classics department in 1954. He taught classics at Holy Cross for 20 years, and he served as administrator of the Jesuit Community from 1974-1976. He died on October 1, 1978.
