Scope and Contents

This collection contains the papers of Fr. Prendergast dating from 1872 to 1924. Materials include correspondence, personal items such as receipts and photographs, account books, and religious writings. The religious items forms the majority of the collection and mostly consists of sermons and retreat notebooks. Lecutres may also be found in the collection. Finally, the collection has one of Fr. Prendergast's stoles, which is in fragile condition.

Biographical Note

Rev. Joseph Prendergast, S.J. was born in Clinton, MA on February 2, 1856 and attended College of the Holy Cross from 1874 to 1877. He left in order to enter the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate in Frederick, MD. He taught at Fordham University and Georgetown University before becoming ordained as a priest in 1892 in Woodstock, MD. Afterwards, Fr. Prendergast taught at St. Peter’s College, Loyola College, and Holy Cross before teaching in Kingston, Jamaica for three years. He returned to Holy Cross in 1919 as professor of advanced English. He died December 7, 1924 at the age of 68.
