Scope and Contents
This collection contains the papers of Fr. Carroll including personal records, family reunion materials, notebooks and sermons. Additionally, it holds correspondence concerning the research and writing of The Unclassified Jesuit dating to the mid 1960s as well as general correspondence dating from 1927-1984. The bulk of the collections is handwritten and typed notes, drafts and a bibliography relating to The Unclassified Jesuit dating from the mid-1960s. Finally, the collection has seven pieces of repoussé, which is a metalworking technique.

Biographical Note
Rev. William A. Carroll, S.J., son of Thomas F. and Anna (Materson Carroll, was born in Millville, MA on November 4, 1913. He matriculated to Holy Cross in 1930, and then entered the Society of Jesus in August of 1933. He studied philosophy at Weston College from 1937-1939 and attended graduate school at Boston College from 1939-1940. He was ordained on June 17, 1944. Additionally, Fr. Carroll studied in Belgium and Rome from 1945-1947. He taught classics at Holy Cross from 1962-1977. While at Holy Cross, Rev. Carroll wrote The Unclassified Jesuit, an historical account of the Jesuits from 1540-1773. He died on September 29, 1984.
